JMU Closes Historic Season in Game Three Heartbreaker Against LSU
5/28/2016 1:57:00 PM | Softball
HARRISONBURG, Va. – No. 7 James Madison (50-6) closed a historic season on Saturday afternoon, falling to No. 10 LSU (50-16) in back-to-back games in the NCAA Harrisonburg Super Regional in front of a record crowd of 2,525 at Veterans Memorial Park. The Dukes fell to the Tigers 2-0 in game two, which forced a decisive game three that saw them fall just short of a comeback in a 3-2 loss.
In the winner-take-all series finale, LSU jumped to a 1-0 lead with a solo homer in the first inning. Three innings later, sophomore pitcher/utility player Megan Good tied it with a one-run home run in the fourth, her third of the Super Regional.
The Tigers added two runs in the fifth on a single followed by an error and sac fly, but sophomore infielder Morgan Tolle closed the deficit to one in the bottom half of the frame, reaching on an error and pushing junior infielder Madyson Moran across the plate.
JMU's comeback fell short in the seventh as LSU worked its way out of a bases-loaded situation, clinching their spot in the Women's College World Series.
In the first game, James Madison recorded five hits in the shutout from LSU's Allie Walljasper, marking the first time in 55 games that the Dukes have been shut out.
As the program's single-season wins holder, Good closed the season with a 32-3 record, including a complete game performance in game two, allowing two runs on four hits on the day.
Senior pitcher Jailyn Ford closed her career with an 18-3 record, pushing her career and program record total to 82-20. In four and 1/3 innings of work, Ford allowed three runs on five hits while striking out four.
SENIOR CLASS OF 2016
Seniors Ford, Erica Field and Hannah Hayes rewrote the James Madison softball record book in their careers as Dukes. The trio started and played all 233 games throughout four years, setting the all-time career games played and games started charts. As a class, they compiled a 185-48 record, breaking the program's single-season wins record four years in a row. They led JMU to four NCAA appearances, two Colonial Athletic Association titles, two hosted NCAA Regional tournaments and the program's first Super Regional.
"They have taken a program that no one knew anything about 4 years ago, 5 years ago and gave it a national face and I couldn't be prouder of our senior class, they have done what they can they have taken us as far as they could and now it is up to our underclassman to earn the right to wear the uniform and hope they can make it farther and that's our goal.
