HARRISONBURG, Va. – Coming from behind for a set-three victory, James Madison volleyball (9-5, 1-0 CAA) completed a straight-set sweep (25-22, 25-15, 32-30) of William & Mary (6-8, 0-1 CAA) inside Godwin Hall on Wednesday evening to open Colonial Athletic Association play.
JMU's offense powered past the Tribe as sophomore setter Tilbe Yaglioglu dished out 29 assists and guided the Dukes to a .302 hitting percentage compared to W&M's .180 clip. A trio of Dukes tallied double-digit kills, led by senior right side hitter Janey Goodman¸ who tallied 13 on a .263 hitting percentage. Freshman outside hitter Briley Brind'Amourand sophomore outside hitter Bryn Reckeradded 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
Defensively, the Dukes racked up seven team blocks as Recker tallied a team-leading four as Goodman, senior middle blocker Kelly Robertsonand sophomore middle blockerTaylor Gaileach totaled three. Junior libero Taylor Austinracked up 25 digs as she moved into JMU's all-time digs chart. Recker chipped in 10 digs to garner her first and the Dukes' fourth double-double of the season.
The opening set of conference play was tightly contested, featuring 16 ties. The Dukes capitalized on a Tribe error to take a 21-20 advantage late before using two kills and a couple of William & Mary errors to pull ahead to cap a 25-22 victory. Goodman highlighted the Dukes in the opening set with nine kills on 12 swings for a .750 hitting percentage. JMU dominated in the second set, 25-15, to take a 2-0 advantage into the break.
The Tribe opened the third set with two kills and a JMU error to jump out to a 3-0 lead. JMU battled back to lock the set up at 14-all with the help of a Tribe error, but W&M answered with a kill to regain the lead.
William & Mary used a 5-0 run to pull ahead of the Dukes and faced a 24-21 set point, but JMU fought off three consecutive set points to lock things up once more at 24-all. As the Tribe gained a 29-28 advantage, Brind'Amour delivered back-to-back kills to give the Dukes a 30-29 set victory and conference-opening sweep.
GOODMAN CONTINUES TO RISE
Leading the Dukes with 13 kills, Goodman continued her historic rise on JMU's all-time kills chart, jumping Lindsay Callahan (2007-10) to rank third all-time in career kills. The Powhatan, Va. native has racked up 1,359 career kills early through her senior season and is now chasing down the second spot held by Dana Jones (2000-03) who tallied 1,566 kills over her time as a Duke.
AUSTIN CLIMBS INTO TOP TEN
With her 13th consecutive double-digit digs performance of the season, Austin vaulted herself onto JMU's all-time digs list, ranking eighth with 1,107 career digs. Megan Niski (2012-2015) holds the seventh spot with 1,137 digs.
