OTTAWA, Canada – Former James Madison midfielder
Jonathan Barden (2011-14) has signed with Ottawa Fury FC, the club announced on Thursday.
Barden spent the past two years with IBV Vestmannaeyjar in the Icelandic Premier League, appearing in 43 matches in all competitions and playing primarily as a right back.
The Harrow, England native played in 66 career games across four seasons at JMU, starting 65 of them. He tallied six goals and four assists while playing for the Dukes, including four goals and two assists during his breakout senior year. Barden was named Second Team VaSID All-State and Third Team All-Colonial Athletic Association as a senior and CAA All-Rookie as a freshman.
On Oct. 29, 2014, Barden scored twice in a 2-1 win over William & Mary that secured a berth in the 2014 CAA Tournament, opening the door for the sixth-seeded Dukes to capture the 2014 CAA title. He also scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory at Lipscomb on Sept. 14 of that season. A central midfielder during his JMU career, Barden was also a quality passer. On Sept. 29, 2012, he registered two assists in a 4-0 win over Towson.
Fury FC plays in the United Soccer League (USL), the second division in the United States Soccer Federation league system. The USL features 30 teams across the U.S. and Canada, including FC Cincinnati, where former JMU midfielder
Francisco Narbon currently plays. Fury FC will play its first USL season starting March 24 and will serve as the affiliate for Major League Soccer's Montreal Impact.
JMU finished its 2016 campaign with four straight wins, including five victories in the last six matches.
