HARRISONBURG, Va. - James Madison dropped its first loss of the season on Monday night, dropping a physical, 69-53 battle to Old Dominion in non-conference men's basketball action at the JMU Convocation Center. The Dukes dropped to 1-1 with the loss, while ODU improved to 2-0.
JMU caused problems for the Monarchs on defense for much of the night, forcing ODU into 16 turnovers, including 10 in the first half, but couldn't close a second-half deficit while shooting 32.1 percent (18-of-56) from the floor and 24 percent (6-of-25) from the three-point line.
Junior
Stuckey Mosley led the Dukes in scoring for the second time in as many games, tallying 14 points to go with six boards and three assists, while senior
Ramone Snowden racked up 13 points on an efficient 3-of-5 performance that included a pair of threes and a 5-of-6 evening at the free throw line.
The Dukes used back-to-back three-pointers from Mosley to take an early 11-9 lead with 12:08 to play in the first half, but ODU responded with a quick 5-0 run to take the lead for the final time. After trailing by seven at halftime, JMU cut the Monarchs' lead to five on multiple occasions, but couldn't close within that as ODU used a 10-0 run from the 5:36 mark to the 3:56 mark to put things out of reach.
Junior guard B.J. Stith led four double-digit scorers for ODU, racking up 19 points, five rebounds and four assists on the evening, while his brother Brandan added 12 points and seven rebounds for himself.
QUOTING COACH ROWE
"I'm proud of our battle tonight against a really experienced and talented Old Dominion group. We didn't hit enough shots when we needed to, but we kept a great rebounding team off the offensive glass for the most part and we played really disruptive defense. We know we need to work on the offense moving forward, so we'll get back to work and learn from this one."
PICKING POCKETS
With seven steals on Monday evening, the Dukes have 20 combined steals through two contests. In 2016-17, JMU did not reach that point until the fifth game of the season. Guards
Joey McLean,
Matt Lewis and
Darius Banks all lead the way for the Dukes with four apiece.
