HARRISONBURG, Va. – Top-ranked James Madison is set to host CAA-rival Richmond for Senior Day and the annual "Black Out" game on Saturday, Nov. 11.
Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at Bridgeforth Stadium/Zane Showker Field and will be televised on MASN2. It will also be streamed on MadiZONE HD SportsNet, and can also be heard on the JMU/Sprint Broadcast Network, with pregame coverage starting at 2:30 p.m.
The 2017 JMU football season is presented by CarMax and Saturday's game is sponsored by the Virginia Lottery.Â
SERIES HISTORY
Saturday marks the 35th meeting between JMU and Richmond, with the Spiders holding an 18-16 advantage, which includes UR leading 9-7 in Harrisonburg. Last season, JMU won a thriller, 47-43, at UR.
WIN STREAK TO 21, TIED FOR FIFTH IN FCS HISTORY JMU's 38-3 win over URI last Saturday marked JMU's program-record 21st consecutive triumph, which extended the CAA record and longest mark in all of Division I. Only three other teams, all FBS programs, have at least 10 wins. Following JMU are Miami out of the ACC with a FBS-best 13 straight wins. Both Georgia (SEC) and Wisconsin (Big Ten) have won 10 consecutive. North Carolina A&T (MEAC) is second in the FCS with nine in a row.
As mentioned before, the Dukes have also 16 straight league victories, which set a CAA record last week. The 21-game mark is tied for fifth all-time in FCS history with Colgate (2002-03) and Montana (1995-96). JMU is the first FCS team to win at least 20 consecutive since Harvard's 22 from 2013-15. The Dukes last saw defeat on Sept. 24, 2016 - a 56-28 setback at ACC-foe North Carolina. JMU has also won 22 straight games against FCS opponents, with the last loss coming on Dec. 5, 2015 versus Colgate in the second round of the playoffs.
OFF TO BEST START EVER
JMU improved to 9-0 last week, extending its best start to a season in the 46-year history of the program The Dukes began 2015 with a 7-0 record. Historically, JMU does have one unbeaten season, going 9-0-1 in 1975. The Dukes opened that year with a tie before reeling off nine straight wins.
JMU outscores opponents by an average of 38.2 to 9.2, which leads the FCS in win margin (+29.0). JMU paces the nation in scoring defense while ranking sixth in scoring offense. JMU has not allowed any team to score more than 14 points and has held all FCS foes to under 300 yards.
SCOUTING RICHMOND
The Spiders enter this weekend with a 5-4 overall record and 3-3 mark in CAA play following a 22-0 victory last week at Villanova. UR scores 33.3 points per game, which is second only to JMU in the CAA, while conceding 25.8 points per outing.
The Spiders lead the league in passing offense (358.4) and total offense (470.3) but rank 10th in total defense (379.6) and 11th in rushing defense (173.7). Kyle Lauletta leads the CAA in passing (356.9) and pass touchdowns (26), and DejonBrissett is second in both receptions (6.89) and receiving yards (98.8). Russ Huesman is in his first season at Richmond after spending the previous eight years at Chattanooga. He has a 64-41 career record. Huesman was previously defensive coordinator at UR from 2004-08, and helped the Spiders to their 2008 national championship.
HONORING THE SENIORS
This Saturday, JMU honors its 23 seniors prior to kick off versus Richmond. It will be the 50th game of the senior class. Since the beginning of the 2014 season, JMU has gone 41-8 (.837), which includes a stellar 26-4 mark (.867) during CAA play. This class will be the first in JMU history to make four straight FCS playoff appearances and the first ever claim at least nine overall wins and six league wins in every season. JMU is seeking its first four-peat of a CAA title, needing two more wins to accomplish the feat. Four seniors have been previously named All-Americans.
Headlining the senior class is quarterback Bryan Schor, who is JMU's record holder with 57 passing touchdowns. He was the 2016 CAA Offensive Player of the Year. Andrew Ankrah ranks tied for sixth all-time at JMU with 24.5 sacks and is a 2015 All-America honoree. Raven Greene, who earned All-America accolades last season, is tied for third with 12 interceptions. Aaron Stinnie has helped JMU become of one of the most prolific offenses while protecting Schor's blindside at left tackle.
SPREADING THE LOVE
Bryan Schor recorded four touchdown passes in JMU's rout of Rhode Island and found four different receivers in the process. Terrence Alls, who led the game with five catches for 73 yards, scored on a 20-yard touchdown on a third-and-long. David Eldridge had three grabs for 41 yards and a score, while both Jonathan Kloosterman and Ishmael Hyman had TDs on their only reception.
DUKES ROLL IN SECOND HALF AT URI
Leading 7-3 at the break, JMU shut down any chance of an upset, reeling off 31 straight points and dominating all three phases in the second half for a 38-3 win at Rhode Island on Nov. 4. JMU gave up only 18 yards and -13 rushing yards in the second half.
Bryan Schor was 14-of-17 for 150 yards and four touchdowns while Percy Agyei-Obese rushed for 95 yards. JMU forced two turnovers and created seven sacks, as it ranks fourth nationally with 4.00 sacks per game (36).Â
ROAD WARRIORS EXTEND RECORD
JMU set a program record for consecutive road wins at William & Mary on Oct. 21, and it extended the record on Nov. 4 in the win at Rhode Island. The Dukes have won nine in a row in true road games dating back to Sept. 24, 2016. That includes eight straight CAA road wins during the stretch.
DEFENSE DOMINATE JMU's defense has risen to the occasion week in and week out since the start of the season and has quickly turned into one of the tops in FCS. The Dukes lead the FCS in six categories, including scoring defense (9.2), total defense (218.2), passing defense (130.3), takeaways (26), red-zone defense (54.5%) and pass efficiency defense (71.32 rating).They rank in the top 10 in 13 statistical areas, as they also rank second in interceptions (18), third in defensive touchdowns (4), fourth in both sacks (4.0) and first-down defense (123) and fifth in turnover margin (1.44). Other top-10 categories include ninth in rushing defense (87.9) and 10th in net punting (39.1).
The secondary has been solid all year, having only allowed three passing touchdowns and collecting a CAA-best 18 interceptions. Rashad Robinson and Jordan Brown lead the CAA with five interceptions while Jimmy Moreland has four picks. He, Andrew Ankrah and Darrious Carter all lead the team in fumble recoveries (2).
