HARRISONBURG, Va. - Delaware guard Darian Bryant hit an off-balance three-pointer from the left corner with 5.5 seconds left to erase a lengthy James Madison comeback and hand the Dukes a heartbreaking 58-57 loss in Colonial Athletic Association action at the JMU Convocation Center.
The Dukes (7-20, 5-9 CAA) battled through a bumpy first half to take a one-point lead into the break, but the Blue Hens (11-16, 4-10 CAA) went 15-of-25 (60 percent) from the field in the second stanza and edged JMU in the final seconds.
Trailing by six with 4:19 to play, JMU ripped off a 9-0 run, capped by a clutch three-pointer from sophomore Terrence Johnson that gave the Dukes a 55-52 lead with just 59.7 seconds left. On Delaware's next possession, however, an errant offensive rebound found its way to freshman Ryan Daly, who drilled his second three-pointer of the contest to tie things back up at 55-55.
JMU pulled back ahead immediately, with senior forward Ivan Lukic sinking a baby hook with less than 20 seconds to play, putting the Dukes back up, 57-55. The Blue Hens did not call timeout on the inbound, pushing the ball up to Bryant in the corner, who drilled the leaning gamewinner with a hand in his face.
Senior Ramone Snowden had one of his most complete games of the season for the Dukes, tallying 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting, while adding a game-high seven boards and a career-high five assists, including a perfect pass through traffic to set up Johnson's three-pointer.
Senior Jackson Kentwas aggressive throughout, racking up a game-high 17 points, including 10 after halftime, to go with four assists and three rebounds, while Lukic added 12 points of his own, marking his fourth double-digit evening in the last five contests.
Bryant and Daly paced Delaware with a dozen points each, while Eric Carter chipped in 10.
QUOTING COACH ROWE
"That's as tough a loss as we've had all year. I'm really proud of the way that lineup battled back down the stretch for us, but we just missed a couple plays to let them back into it late."
