CONWAY, S.C. – Junior outfielder
Adam Sisk hit two three-run home runs to lead James Madison baseball past No. 11 Coastal Carolina, the reigning national champion, 11-3 at Springs Brooks Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
JMU finished the opening weekend with a 2-1 record, while the Chanticleers fell to 1-2.
Sisk hit his first homer over the left field wall to give the Dukes a 6-1 lead in the fourth inning after junior outfielder
Mike Sciorra had walked and junior shortstop
Kyle McPherson had singled. He hit his second to put the game out of reach at 11-2 in the fifth after a
Ky Parrott hit an RBI single and Sciorra scored on a wild pitch.
Sunday was the first two-homer game of Sisk's career, and the first for JMU since Parrott homered twice against College of Charleston on March 28, 2015. This also marks the first time in his career that he homered in back-to-back games after he went yard against St. John's on Saturday.
The Dukes initially took a 3-1 lead in the third inning when redshirt junior second baseman
Josh Wyatt hit a two-RBI triple off the wall in right center to score Sisk and McPherson.
Junior pitcher
Matt Colon earned his first career win after throwing one and one third innings of scoreless relief. In his first start for the Dukes, junior
Josh Silvestri allowed just two runs across three and two thirds innings while striking out three Chanticleers. Sophomores
Matt Marsili and
Christian Bourne and freshman
Kevin Kelly combined to allow one run across the final four innings to close out the win.
TOP PERFORMERS
Sisk led the Dukes with a career-high six RBI and three runs scored. McPherson also scored three runs after notching hits in his first three at-bats. Parrott and freshman first baseman
Garrett Marchand also collected two hits apiece.
RANKED WIN
This is the first win over a top-25 team for JMU since the Dukes took down No. 20 Maryland 8-6 on March 24, 2015. The victory over Coastal Carolina, who was ranked as high as No. 9 in some polls, was the first over a top-10 since April 25, 2007 when the Dukes beat No. 3 Virginia 7-6 in 14 innings.
QUOTING COACH IKENBERRY
"I was proud of the way our guys responded today! Our pitching staff did a great job and our offense competed up and down the lineup. The top of the order really set the tone early led by a great day by
Kyle McPherson going 3-for-4."
