RICHMOND, Va. – Five players scored at least two goals and James Madison lacrosse controlled virtually every phase of the game for a 14-8 victory at Richmond on Wednesday evening at Robins Stadium.
The Dukes returned to the win column, improving to 6-3 this season, while the Spiders fell to 3-3.
Sophomore midfielder Hanna Haven had a career-high six points off a career-best four goals and two assists, which also matched her personal best. Junior midfielders Elena Romesburg and Haley Warden each had three goals, while senior attacker Margaret Tucker Fogarty and senior midfielder Hannah Jablonski both turned in two goals. Junior attacker Katie Kerrigan also had a game-high three assists.
JMU dominated the midfield, holding a 15-9 advantage in draw controls, led by Jablonski's career-high six draws. Warden also had three, while Romesburg had a pair of wins. The Dukes out-shot the Spiders 31-23, including a 23-12 ledger in shots on goal. They also had leads in ground balls (17-14) and caused turnovers (5-3) and committed just 12 turnovers, to UR's 17.
Senior goalkeeper Emily Poelma earned the decision, improving to 6-3 between the pipes. She finished with four saves on 12 shots on goal. For the Spiders, Sam Geiersbach led the hosts with four goals, while Marissa Brown had a goal and two assists.
In what was a back-and-forth affair in the early going, JMU was able to seize control over the final 12 minutes, outscoring UR 4-0 to grab an 8-4 lead at the break. Haven scored twice during the run to finish the first half with a hat trick.
JMU extended its lead to 10-5 before Richmond tacked on two in a row to make it a 10-7 game with 13:45 to play. After a JMU timeout, the Dukes responded with another 4-0 run in a span of five-and-a-half minutes to lead 14-7 with just under three minutes to play. Two of the four scores were Kerrigan-assisted goals to Jablonski and Romesburg, while the others were unassisted tallies by Warden.
QUOTING COACH KLAES-BAWCOMBE
"We refocused back on ourselves. The losses [last week] conjured up some emotions and fire we hadn't seen from the team," Head Coach Shelley Klaes-Bawcombe said. "They put it all together today. I thought in particular that our draw-control game was excellent. We dominated that aspect of the game. Our defense was a lot more sound and caused a lot of issues for Richmond today."
JABA'S BIG DAY IN THE MIDFIELD
Hannah Jablonski was big for the Dukes when it came to hustle stats, to which she tallied nine. She won a career-high six draw controls and now averages 2.0 draws per game. She also had two ground balls and a caused turnover to go with her pair of goals.
"Today, she was winning the 50-50 balls," Klaes-Bawcombe said. "Specifically, I challenged her and Margaret Tucker Fogarty as seniors to be finishing chances and I think they both stepped up for us."
