NEWARK, Del. – For the third consecutive game, No. 15 James Madison softball notched a run-rule victory as the Dukes topped Delaware 15-1 to clinch the Colonial Athletic Association series sweep Saturday at the Delaware Softball Field.
With three run-rule victories over the Blue Hens, JMU outscored Delaware 38 to 4 to record JMU's second consecutive series sweep. The Dukes improved to 37-6 overall with a 10-2 mark in league play after tallying the program's sixth straight victory. Delaware stumbled to 17-21 on the year and 5-7 in conference play.
Senior infielder Niki Prince led JMU at the plate after going 2-for-3 with a double and four RBIs. Prince reached base in eight of her nine plate appearances over the three-game series.
Freshman infielder Madison Naujokas went 2-for-3 with three RBIs after slugging her first career home run. Freshman catcher Kierstin Roadcap was a perfect 1-for-1 with a walk and a three-run home run. Junior Morgan Tolle was held hitless for the first time since March 10 as her hit streak was ended after 21 consecutive games.
Junior Megan Good notched her 27th victory in the circle after pitching three shutout innings against the Blue Hens. The right-hander allowed just two hits while striking out three. Freshman Odicci Alexander tossed one frame of perfect relief tallying a strikeout before redshirt sophomore Jessica McCabe closed out the game allowed one run off two hits with a strikeout.
After trading a scoreless first inning, JMU struck first in the top of the second. After singles from senior infielder Madyson Moran and Naujokas, Roadcap slugged her sixth home run of the season. Her round-tripper to left center gave JMU an early 3-0 lead.
JMU led off the top of the third with a walk issued to junior pinch hitter Jessica Mrozek and a single to right field off the bat of Good. Back-to-back singles from senior outfielder Taylor Newton and Alexander plated two runs to push JMU's lead to 5-0.
Prince continued the third-inning damage with a two-RBI double to left field to extend JMU's lead to 7-0. She advanced to third on a wild pitch before Roadcap drew a walk to put runners on the corners. A double steal plated JMU's fifth run of the inning as Prince swiped home plate while Roadcap snagged second.
Good retired eight consecutive batters before Delaware knocked back-to-back singles in the bottom of the third to put runners on the corners. A wild pitch got away from Roadcap, but she flipped to Good in time to throw out the runner streaking home to preserve the shutout.
JMU loaded the bases in the top of the fourth after a single from freshman outfielder Cambry Arnold, a fielder's choice and a fielding error on Good's infield ground ball and a walk to Newton. Bases-loaded walks issued to Alexander and Moran drove home two runs to push the lead to 10-0.
Prince drove home two runs with a single to center field before Naujokas hammered an off-speed pitch to left center for her first career home run to extend JMU's lead to 15-0.
After Alexander pitched a perfect frame in the fourth, McCabe took over in the circle in the fifth. The Blue Hens knocked two doubles to plate a run and break up the shutout, but JMU held on for a 15-1 victory to clinch the series sweep.
