HARRISONBURG, Va. – Ian Haley has joined the James Madison field hockey coaching staff as assistant coach and technical director, Head Coach Christy Morgan announced Monday afternoon.
"We are so excited to have someone with the level of coaching and playing experience that Ian has joining our staff," Morgan said. "His strong character helps him coach with passion and purpose, which will help us continue creating the ultimate experience for all our players."
Haley brings nearly 15 years of both playing and coaching experience to the staff, including competing at the 2012 London Olympics for Team South Africa. He is currently the Director of Hockey at Queen's College in Taunton of Somerset, England, and a player/coach of Taunton Vale Hockey Club's Men's 1st XI team.
"I am thrilled to be moving from England to the US to start a new challenge at James Madison University," Haley stated. "The campus and facilities are first rate and, more importantly, the people are genuine and friendly. The level of play that the group has already achieved over the past three years is impressive, and I look forward to further collaboration with Coach Morgan and Coach Stuart to ensure the team continues to grow."
As a coach, he led his team to the U18 Boys National Cup quarterfinals in 2016 while taking the U18 Girls team to a sixth-place finish in the National Hockey Finals. In 2013, the U16 Girls were runners-up in the National Hockey finals while, in 2012, the U13 Boys team won the National Hockey Finals championship.
"So far, I have seen a unique hunger and work ethic that leads me to believe that, with this group, anything is possible," Haley added. "I cannot wait to get started and am looking forward to an exciting journey with a great bunch of student-athletes."
The Dukes open the 2017 season on Saturday, Aug. 26 with a 1 p.m. game at Liberty. They then return to Harrisonburg for the first of five straight home games, starting with Old Dominion on Wednesday, Aug. 30 at 6 p.m.
