Late Rally Falls Short at VMI

The Dukes dropped their second consecutive game to fall to 24-24 on the season, while the Keydets improved to 22-29 overall.
Trailing 7-4 in the eighth, redshirt junior first baseman Brett Johnson hit his first triple of the season to right field to lead off the frame. Redshirt sophomore designated hitter Ryan Lynch followed with an RBI single up the middle to cut the lead to 7-5. Lynch would score on a fielding error to make it 7-6 during the next at-bat after junior third baseman Bradley McKay singled to center.
JMU put the go-ahead run on second base in the ninth after junior right fielder Adam Sisk walked, Johnson singled up the middle and redshirt junior shortstop Tanner Dofflemyer moved them over on a groundout to first. Freshman catcher Kyle Hayes was beat on a tough groundout to end the game.
Junior shortstop Kyle McPherson led the Dukes at the plate with a 3-for-5 night and a run scored. Johnson went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
The Dukes got strong performances from the back end of their bullpen, as three relievers combined for four scoreless innings. Senior Michael Evans threw the fifth and the sixth and struck out six batters. Freshman Kevin Kelly allowed just one hit in a scoreless seventh and freshman Fox Semones allowed just a walk in a scoreless eighth.
