RICHMOND, Va. - James Madison closed out its first tournament of the 2017-18 campaign on Tuesday afternoon, taking home ninth place at the 2017 Janney VCU Shootout, hosted at the par-72, 6,927-yard Tuckahoe Creek Course at the Country Club of Virginia.

JMU closed the 12-team tournament with a 4-over 292 that put it just two strokes back of eighth-place and host VCU at 867 (292-283-292).
Freshman
Ignacio Montero led the way for the Dukes on the final day of his first collegiate tournament, using four birdies, including one on his second-to-last hole, to post a 1-under 71 that boosted him into a tie for 43rd at the 72-player event at 221 (75-75-71).

Senior
Jack Floydd continued his steady play for JMU, carding an even-par 72 on Tuesday to give the Dukes their highest individual finish in a tie for 16th at 213 (70-71-72). Juniors
Ben Tucker (t-28; 218) and
Shota Ozaki (t56; 225) posted rounds of 2-over 74 and 3-over 75, while senior
Matt Cowgill finished at 5-over 77 to close the week tied for 28th at 218 (75-66-77).

Sophomore
Walker Cress, playing as an individual, had the best round of the day for JMU, birdieing four of his first seven holes and his final hole to match his career low with a 3-under 69 that propelled him into a tie for 43rd at 221 (80-72-69).

West Virginia took home the team title, closing the week at 842 (-22) and eight strokes clear of second-place Virginia Tech, while Oliver Whatley of Rutgers, who was playing as an individual, earned medalist honors with a final score of 206 (-10; 65-72-69).

UP NEXT
The Dukes will go three weeks before their next tournament, which will see them head to Lonnie Poole Golf Club in Raleigh, N.C. to take part in the Wolfpack Fall Intercollegiate on Oct. 2-3. Lonnie Poole GC is also the site of the 2018 Colonial Athletic Association Championships.
