HARRISONBURG, Va. - James Madison jumped out to an early lead over William & Mary on Tuesday night, but the Tribe used a hot-shooting second half to hand the Dukes an 84-76 Colonial Athletic Association loss in men's basketball action at the JMU Convocation Center.
JMU (4-11, 0-2 CAA) held the powerful Tribe (9-4, 2-0 CAA) offense mostly in check in the first half, but W&M shot 60.9 percent (14-of-23) from the field after the break to outscore the Dukes, 46-35 in the second period.
The Dukes put five players in double figures for the first time since a Dec. 7 contest at The Citadel, led by junior
Stuckey Mosley and freshman
Matt Lewis, who each had 13. Freshman
Dwight Wilson continued his strong play with 12 points across just 15 minutes, while senior
Joey McLean chipped in 10 and junior
Develle Phillips racked up 11 points, nine boards and three blocks on the night.
In the early goings, JMU gained early momentum when it forced four turnovers in the first 2:35 on its way to a 6-0 start that it eventually pushed to a 14-point advantage (37-23) with 3:59 remaining in the first. W&M responded quickly, using a 15-4 run to close out the first half and pull within three at the break.
After a back-and-forth start to the second half, the Tribe used another 15-4 run to take a 62-54 lead with 10:58 to play that they would not relinquish. JMU would cut the deficit to three at the 5:38 mark, but would get no closer as W&M hit all seven of its free throws in the final 40 seconds.
QUOTING COACH ROWE
"This was another game where we didn't quite play 40 complete minutes. We came out with the kind of energy we need to play with and we battled back late, but we can't give good teams in our league any chances to catch momentum. We'll have to learn from this and take steps forward."
