SPARKS, Md. – Fresh off solid performances at the Team USA Fall Classic, James Madison lacrosse sophomores Molly Dougherty and Charlotte Haggerty received invitations to play for the United States Women's National Team at the 2018 IWLCA President's Cup in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
Â
Additionally, former JMU All-American Elena Romesburg ('18) will join Dougherty and Haggerty on the 25-person team for the event, which is scheduled for Nov. 16-18 at Disney's ESPN Wide World of Sports.
Â
"We're showing we can maximize our talent at JMU," Head Coach Shelley Klaes-Bawcombe said. "Great teams allow individuals to soar. The defensive unit is doing a great job of protecting Molly and she's cleaning up all the trash around the net. We are a gritty, fast team and Charlotte is at the top of that strength. We're starting to promote individuals and it will give them tremendous confidence going into this year. If they can dig deep and stay focused, their careers are limitless."
Â
She continued, "US Lacrosse is looking for speed and grit and Elena brings that with her stick skills. She's the perfect product of JMU lacrosse; she's so hardworking and unselfish and this is testament to everything she's done."
Â
Dougherty was a First Team All-CAA selection last season and Virginia Sports Information Directors Rookie of the Year after going 14-0 last season between the pipes en route to helping JMU to its first national championship in the sport of lacrosse. She ranked second in the conference with a 9.38 goals against average and a .465 save percentage (112 saves).
Â
Haggerty saw action in all 23 games as a freshman, scoring 12 goals as a rookie. She also had four caused turnovers, 13 ground balls and 21 draw controls. Haggerty additionally found the back of net four times on the free position.
Â
Romesburg became the first NCAA Elite 90 winner at JMU and in the Colonial Athletic Association in any sport. A CAA Institutional Scholar-Athlete of the Year and JMU Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Romesburg was an ILMedia Third Team All-American last season and was twice named to the All-CAA First Team. She finished her career ranking third at JMU in career draw controls (157), sixth in free-position goals (34), 11th in ground balls (118) and 13th in goals (125).
Â
Dougherty and Haggerty are two of six current collegiate lacrosse players named to the team. Only three underclassmen were tabbed to the National Team for the President's Cup, which is a signature event of the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association and features more than 300 teams competing.
Â
On Nov. 17, Team USA will play an intra-squad Blue-White exhibition under Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) rules, followed by modified games against select teams from the United Women's Lacrosse League and the Women's Professional Lacrosse League.
Â
"Our ability to produce athletes who can make an impact at the international level is something we've worked towards for a long time at James Madison," Klaes-Bawcombe said. "To see our program perform at such a level that the U.S. Team wanted to dig deeper within and see what kind of talent we possess is a huge complement to what we're doing."
