HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison women's basketball took down Winthrop 56-39 on Sunday afternoon. The Dukes 4-1 start to the season is the best since 2013-14 when they went 5-0.

After a slow start, James Madison (4-1) went on a 10-0 run to take a 12-5 lead. Winthrop (1-5) battled but the Dukes locked down on defense and held the Eagles to just 35 percent shooting to lead 23-12 after the first quarter.

It was a slow second quarter for both squads but the Dukes continued to play stubborn defense, holding the Eagles to just 29 percent shooting and allowing just 10 points in the quarter. The Dukes shot 33 percent to lead 35-22 at the half.

Winthrop opened the third quarter with a basket, which would be its only field goal of the frame. The Dukes allowed just five points from the Eagles, marking the sixth time this season they've held an opponent to 10 points or less in a quarter after doing the same in the second quarter. JMU started the frame hitting its first five field goals and went on to take a 48-26 lead with one quarter to play.

The Eagles outscored the Dukes 12-6 in the final frame but JMU would hold on to take the win 56-39.
