HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison women's basketball defeated George Washington in the season opener 50-37. The Dukes won their season opener for the first time since the 2015-16 season.
James Madison (1-0) started off the game on a 10-0 run keeping the Colonials (0-1) on the defensive until just over three minutes to play in the opening frame. After the first quarter, both
Kelly Koshuta and
Kamiah Smalls led the Dukes with seven of their 16 first quarter points.
George Washington fought back in the second quarter to cut the deficit to three, 18-15. The Dukes then held the Colonials to no field goals for five minutes to lead 24-17 late in the second quarter, which would be the halftime score.
The Colonials outscored the Dukes 16-15 in the third quarter as they tried to make a run for the victory, but the Dukes defense stayed patient and to keep ahead 39-33 with 10 minutes to play.
The Dukes closed out the win holding George Washington to just four points in the final frame, including just 23.5% from the floor. James Madison held George Washington to their lowest scoring output since 2010-11 with their 50-37 win.

- JMU held George Washington to less than 10 points in three of the four quarters
- Logan Reynolds was one block away from tying her career high in blocks as she had four on the night
- Reynold's four blocks led all players
- Kamiah Smalls led all scorers with 14 points, while Lexie Barrier added 12

- Kayla Cooper-Williams grabbed 13 boards on the night with 11 coming on the defensive end
- Madison Green played and scored in her first collegiate game for the Dukes
- JMU went to the free-throw line just eight times compared to the Colonials 21 trips
