No-Hitter, Five Home Runs Lead Dukes Past Stony Brook, Ohio

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Freshman Payton Buresch hurled her first collegiate no-hitter, while the offense tallied 21 runs on 18 hits over two games to lead James Madison softball past Stony Brook (13-0), and Ohio (8-0).
The Dukes improved to 19-5, picking up their first two home wins of the season. Stony Brook fell to 7-8 while Ohio slipped to 9-12.
Buresch's (9-3) first career no-hitter comes on the anniversary of the programs first no-hitter in 2005 as Briana Carrera tossed six innings of ball only walking one batter. Buresch pitched five innings, facing 18 batters only walking three while fanning four.
It was a team effort at the plate as three Dukes went 2-for-3 on route to a season high 13 runs. Freshman Sara Jubas drove three runs with two singles to center field to lead the Dukes in RBI. Sophomore's Odicci Alexander, Madison Naujokas and Kate Gordon all launched long balls against the Seawolves to end the game in five innings.
Alexander led the Dukes past the Bobcats, going 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs and three RBI. She was a triple away from the cycle, ending the game with a blast over the center field wall. In the circle, the Boydton, Va. product fanned three batters while walking none, only allowing six hits to up her record to 10-2.Â
Jubas hit her second homerun of the season in the fourth inning over the left center wall to up her hit total of the day to three.
The Dukes were patient at the plate, drawing eight walks against the Bobcats, attributing to two of JMU's eight runs.
QUOTING COACH LAPORTE
"We were so excited to finally be able to play at home, in front of a strong JMU crowd. We fed off their energy, it was a great atmosphere even in the cold weather. I was pleased with our performance at the plate as we showed good discipline and capitalized on balls we knew we could hit. I am so proud of Payton as this week she worked really hard to hit her spots and it paid off today in the circle."
