Long Ball Powers Dukes Past #15 California, UTEP

HONOLULU – The James Madison softball team scored four home runs over two games to defeat #15 California and UTEP in non-conference action to kick off the Dukes stint at the Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament in Honolulu, Hawaii on Friday afternoon.
The Dukes improve to 11-2 on the season while California fell to 17-2 and UTEP slides to 9-10.
GAME ONE – CALIFORNIA
The Dukes scored four runs in the top of the seventh to win the game after sophomore Odicci Alexander had an RBI single in the top of the sixth to tie the game. California fell after only plating one run in the bottom of the third inning off a RBI double to left field.
Sophomore Kate Gordon hit a leadoff home run, her third of the season, in the top of the seventh to give the Dukes the 2-1 lead. Four batters later, senior Ashley Samuels crushed a three run shot over the left field wall, leading to the final score 5-1.
In the circle, freshman Payton Buresch threw a complete game only allowing one run on four hits while striking out one to move her overall record to 5-1.
GAME TWO – UTEP
Sophomore Odicci Alexander threw a complete game shutout, leading JMU to a 6-0 win over UTEP in the final game on Friday evening. The Boydton, Va. product only allowed three hits over 25 batters faced striking out six and walking none.
Senior Morgan Tolle led the way at the plate with a three run home run over the center field wall in the sixth inning. Gordon turned in another stellar outing, going 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and a walk, while Alexander went 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run and two RBI on the game.
Three singles from Alexander, Gordon and Cambry Arnold in the fifth would give the Dukes the early lead 2-0 before Tolle and Alexander added their home runs in the bottom of the sixth.
UP NEXT
The Dukes are back in action tomorrow at 6 p.m. ET as they will face fellow east coast foe, East Carolina before taking on Longwood in the nightcap.
