HARRISONBURG, Va. – UNCW scored five unanswered runs to hand James Madison a 5-2 loss in the finale of a Colonial Athletic Association baseball series at Eagle Field on Sunday afternoon.
Â
The Dukes (21-23, 6-12 CAA) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after three innings but the Seahawks (29-17, 11-7 CAA) scattered three runs over the fourth, fifth and seventh innings to take the 3-2 lead and never looked back.
Â
Seniors
Zach Tondi, Ryan Coale and
Bradley McKay accounted for all of JMU's hits in the contest, with Tondi's hit being a double off the right field wall that drove home both freshman
Josh Jones and sophomore
DaVonn Griffin.
Â
Freshman
Nick Stewart started for the Dukes, tossing five innings giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits and struck out six batters to give him 55 on the season. Sophomore
Shelton Perkins suffered the loss to move to 3-1 on the season after throwing 2/3 of an inning, giving up one run on one hit.
Â
After Tondi's two-RBI double in the third inning, UNCW scored a run in the fourth off a fielding error and tied the game in the fifth off a wild pitch.
Â
In the seventh, the Seahawks loaded the bases with one out and Kep brown hit a ground ball to third base where McKay touched third for one out and fired a throw across the infield to first but the runner was called safe after freshman
Michael Morgan pinned the oncoming throw in his armpit off a short hop, allowing the go-ahead run to score.

Senior recognition prior to the game
QUOTING COACH IKE
"I was proud of the way we played defense but we needed to be more aggressive at the plate. The CAA is a tough conference and we just happened to be on the bad end of things this weekend. We have to put this behind us and continue fighting the rest of the season."
