HARRISONBURG, Va. – Jennifer Herzig of James Madison softball has been promoted from assistant coach to associate head coach, as announced Thursday by Head Coach Loren LaPorte.
Â
"Over the past six years, I am grateful to have had the opportunity to help this program develop into a nationally competitive team and I am excited to continue helping our players and program grow," Herzig said. "From hosting an NCAA Super Regional in 2016 to having the opportunity to coach four All-Americans, it's safe to say JMU is an incredibly special place. I want to thank Loren and our administration for this opportunity, and I look forward to the seasons ahead."
Â
Following her sixth season in Harrisonburg, Herzig has compiled a 280-70 overall record, slating a 107-11 mark in Colonial Athletic Association play. During 2018 campaign, she helped the Dukes to their seventh overall and sixth consecutive NCAA Regional appearance as JMU captured a 43-14 record, recording 19-2 in conference competition.
Â
"Jennifer has been a major reason for this program's success over the last six years," said LaPorte. "Her work ethic, dedication and passion are truly remarkable and the program is very lucky to have her. Not only is Jennifer a quality and respected coach, she is a great person and a terrific role model for our student athletes."
Â
Working specifically with the hitters, catchers and the outfield, Herzig has been a considerable force behind the scenes for the Dukes, assisting with recruiting and scouting reports, as well as on the field. This past season, Herzig coached Kate Gordon to the first outfielding All-American honor in program history. From 2014-16, Herzig instructed Erica Field to three straight CAA Defensive Player of the Year honors. Â
Â
Along with four All-American student-athletes, she boasts five NFCA All-Region and four All-CAA picks during her tenure. She has also coached the Dukes to two 50-plus win seasons, setting a program record for amassing 52 wins in the 2017 season. Assisting JMU to three CAA Championship titles, Herzig helped the Dukes seal the program's first back-to-back victories in 2016 and 2017. She has produced six CAA Players of the Year and four CAA Rookies of the Year.
