HARRISONBURG, Va. – During the summer of 2018, construction commenced on the JMU Athletics Training Center at Sentara Park, an indoor performance facility to be used by all James Madison Athletics programs. The facility is located on the upper terrace level of Sentara Park with anticipated completion in early fall of 2018.
Â
The structure, manufactured by ClearSpan, features a Shaw Turf synthetic surface and provides an all-weather performance space for all 18 sports. Currently, JMU does not have indoor space for the majority of its outdoor sports to practice during inclement weather conditions.
Â
"Currently when rain, lightning, high wind, snow or weather conditions impact our practices, the only option for our coaches who traditionally practice outdoors is to cancel," Director of Athletics
Jeff Bourne. "This facility will be instrumental for our student-athletes to stay on-schedule in their preparation for competition as we continue to strive towards providing all of our student-athletes with the resources they need for success."
Â
The training facility measures 180 feet by 180 feet and features padded interior walls, LED lighting and ventilation with two large ceiling fans. The middle features a 60-foot height, which tapers out to a 20-foot height on each side.
Â
Sentara Park, located on the corner of Neff Avenue and Port Republic Road, features a varsity competition venue that is shared by men's and women's soccer, lacrosse and track and field. The complex includes outdoor natural and synthetic practice fields, plus the addition of a fourth field dedicated to the covered facility at the top of the hill along Neff Avenue.
