HARRISONBURG, Va. - James Madison Director of Athletics
Jeff Bourne announced on Thursday that
Lauren Hartman has been hired as sports dietitian to provide services to all student-athletes.Â
Â
"Lauren will be a valuable asset for maximizing the health and performance of our student-athletes," Bourne said. "Proper nutrition and overall personal wellness are critical pieces to athletic performance and occupy an important position within our integrated health model at James Madison. Lauren will elevate our nutrition efforts thanks to her background as a student-athlete, her exposure to various areas of development (such as strength and conditioning) and her residency work and research at the University of Texas."
Hartman comes from the University of Texas, where she was an advanced practice resident beginning in August 2016. She served at the first and only ACEND-recognized, accredited residency in sports dietetics in the country. Hartman was the primary sports dietitian for volleyball, rowing and men's basketball, providing individualized guidance, written education materials and team nutrition education sessions.Â
Â
"I'm thrilled to be joining the JMU sports medicine team," Hartman said. "The collaborative approach to caring for JMU athletes, the atmosphere of teamwork and comradery among staff members is invaluable to me. I am committed to continuing to improve access to nutrition services for all student-athletes in order to optimize performance, health and well-being."Â
Â
Beginning in July 2015, Hartman had a fellowship with the Gatorade Sports Nutrition Immersion Program at the University of Texas for a year. She administered comprehensive nutrition services for the men's and women's tennis and softball teams, in which she provided team education, hydration testing, individual consults and menu planning. Hartman also assisted in the provision of care for volleyball, football, men's and women's basketball, women's swimming and diving and baseball.Â
Â
From May 2013 to August 2014, Hartman interned at Duquesne, working with strength and conditioning. She assisted the strength staff in implementing programs and fitness testing for over 200 student-athletes. During her time in Pittsburgh, Hartman supervised nutrition education in which she held post-lift team talks, luncheon presentations and individual consultations.Â
Â
"We are thrilled to welcome
Lauren Hartman as our new sports dietitian at JMU," said
Tom Kuster, associate athletics director for integrated health and sports performance. "Lauren comes to us highly recommended and with great experience under her belt.  She will be charged with continuing to develop our sports nutrition initiatives and services for all sports as part of our commitment to student-athlete well-being and performance development. Our mission with our sports nutrition program will continue to be to provide student-athletes with cutting-edge nutrition knowledge in order to successfully fuel training and conditioning, decrease risk of illness and injury and achieve optimal recovery between workouts. I'm excited to have Lauren as part of our integrated health and performance team working with our student-athletes and coaches towards that end."
Â
Hartman received her Bachelor of Science in health and physical activity from the University of Pittsburgh in 2012. She chose to further her education at Pitt, graduating with her master's degree in clinical nutrition and dietetics in 2015.Â
Â
Among her various professional memberships, Hartman is affiliated with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the Austin Registered Dietitian's Alliance and the Collegiate and Professional Sports Dietitians Association.Â
