PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - James Madison posted its third straight shutout on Thursday evening, taking advantage of a first-half goal from junior
Claire Meiser on its way to a 1-0 victory over Drexel in both teams' Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer opener at Vidas Field.
Â
On the evening, the Dukes (4-6) held the Drexel (3-3-4) offense to just one shot on goal, racking up five of their own on their way to their third victory in as many matches. Meiser's goal, her first of the season and second of her career, proved to be all JMU needed.
Â
Junior
Hannah McShea saved the Dragons' only shot of the match, carding her fourth shutout of the season through the Dukes' first 10 matches. Meiser and junior
Haley Crawford paced the JMU offense on the night, each recording a pair of shots and putting both on frame.
Â
HOW THEY SCORED
35' | Meiser slotted home her first goal of the season just past the half-hour mark, taking a through ball from freshman
Abby Maltese and burying a shot inside the right post to provide all the offense the Dukes would need on the evening.

QUOTING COACH WALTERS
"That was a very good Drexel team we shut out tonight. I'm so proud of the effort the team put into executing the defensive game plan. We got a great lift from the bench with Abby connecting with Claire for the game-winner. It was great for us to get a feel for one of the most consistent teams in the league and to compete well with them, and now we turn our attention to a CAA powerhouse in Hofstra on Sunday afternoon."
Â
SHUTOUT STREAK
The Dukes' shutout on Thursday evening marked their third in as many matches, marking the first such stretch since Sept. 15-22, 2013, when JMU posted three straight 2-0 victories over Davidson, UNCG and Longwood.
Â
UP NEXT
The Dukes will return home over the weekend, welcoming Hofstra to Sentara Park at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 23. On Thursday, the Pride opened their league slate with a 6-0 home win over Towson to improve to 7-3 on the year.
