Karpinski, Koons Claim Doubles Flight Title at River City Invitational

RICHMOND, Va. – James Madison wrapped up play at the River City Invitational with a doubles flight title and four singles victories on Sunday at the Williams-Bollettieri Tennis Center and Westhampton Tennis Center.

Sophomore William Karpinski and freshman Holden Koons won the championship for the Flight D Doubles draw. They defeated Virginia Tech's Bernstine brothers, Chase and Ryan, with a 6-3 victory. This match was continued after play was suspended due to darkness on Saturday.

Junior Alvaro Arce earned third place in the Flight A Singles draw with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Yuval Saloman of Wake Forest. Koons also earned a victory in singles play with a win over ODU's Nicola Vidal, 2-6, 6-4, 10-8. Junior Gonzalo Adis defeated Andre Limon of College of Charleston, 6-4, 6-4. Karpinski defeated Virginia Tech's Chase Bernstine again in singles play with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph.

In Flight D, senior Tate Steinour forced George Mason's Jakob Nielson to a third set but fell 7-5, 3-6, 10-7. Sophomore Stefan Petrovic also won his first set of his match against Daniel Pellerito of William and Mary but lost 3-6, 6-4, 10-8.

"Great weekend of tennis. We played a lot of good teams and gained a lot of experience heading into regionals next weekend. Guys today were down early, but came back fighting hard and finished strong."

UP NEXT
The Dukes are back in action next week, as they take a short trip to Charlottesville, Va., for the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships, held on Oct. 17-22.
