RICHMOND, Va. – James Madison junior defender
Emma Johnson has been selected as the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Â
Johnson helped JMU to its third straight victory last Saturday against High Point (12-5) in the 2019 home opener. The Laurel, Md., native tied her career highs in both caused turnovers and ground balls, tallying four of each.
Â
JMU's defense held HPU without a goal for nearly 23 minutes, aiding to a 7-0 scoring run to give the Dukes the lead for good. Johnson and the Dukes, who collectively produced 17 caused turnovers, also kept the Panthers off the scoreboard for the final 13 minutes to ice the game.
Â
This is second career Defensive Player of the Week honor for Johnson, who won the accolade for the first time nearly a year to the day, back on Feb. 27, 2018. That also came after JMU's victory against HPU, in which she caused two turnovers with three ground balls in a 13-11 victory on the road.
Â
The sixth-ranked Dukes (3-1) return to action on Friday, March 1 when they host Canisius (0-3). The opening draw is set for 5 p.m. from Sentara Park.
