SOUTHPORT, N.C. - Senior
Katie Turk concluded her final James Madison women's golf season with the lowest Colonial Athletic Association Championship round of her career, leading the way for the Dukes as they closed out the tournament in sixth place at the par-72, 6,103-yard Reserve Club at St. James Plantation.
Turk racked up seven pars and a birdie on the difficult front nine, making the turn at even-par as she battled her way to a 4-over 76 that moved her eight spots up the leaderboard and into a tie for 19th (241) at the 40-player event. Her Sunday climb marked the biggest improvement in the field on the final day of competition.
As a team, the Dukes continued to better their score, dropping three more strokes from their second-round mark to post a 315 on Sunday that closed their weekend in sixth place, just a single stroke behind fifth-place Elon.
Junior
Lauren Comegys and freshman
Carly Lyvers each carded final-day rounds of 79 (+7) on Sunday, with Comegys tying for 15th (238) and Lyvers climbing into sole possession of 25th (244).
Freshman
Kate Owens closed her first career inside the top 15 as well, claiming sole possession of 13th (235) after bouncing back from a difficult opening stretch of holes to close out the JMU scoring, while junior
Jordan McKelvin concluded her comeback season in a tie for 32nd (253).
QUOTING COACH BAKER
"I think we learned a lot about what we need to do to take the next step towards being a championship team this week. I'm proud of the way we battled and we know how much work we have to do over the summer and next season. We're excited to have that chance with a young team and I'm looking forward to us taking that step. I'm also extremely thankful to
Katie Turk for her years at JMU and very happy that she concluded her career with a great round!"
