Dukes Earn Sixth Straight CAA Sweep
5/4/2019 7:01:00 PM | Softball
The Dukes improve to 44-7 overall while finishing the regular season at 20-1 in CAA action as Delaware drops to 22-9 and 7-14. JMU's 20 league wins are the most in program history as the Dukes have had 19 conference wins twice before.Â
Sophomore Hannah File had a career-high four hits on the day as she tied a school record with three doubles. Three other Dukes had three hits in the game: Kate Gordon, Odicci Alexander and Logan Newton.Â
Beginning with a double from Gordon, the Dukes garnered three hits in the first inning while plating two runs on a RBI single from Alexander and a sacrifice fly from sophomore Sara Jubas. Delaware answered in the bottom half, taking a 4-2 lead on a grand slam from Karolina Flores.Â
The Blue Hens plated what would be their final run of the game in the bottom of the second. After a scoreless third inning, the Dukes used a four-run frame in the fourth to take the lead. File began the rally with a leadoff double to right center and was brought home on Gordon's 16th home run of the season. Newton drove in another run on a single to right field, but she would reach third on two Delaware fielding errors. Jubas plated the go-ahead run in the fourth on a sac fly to center field.Â
Â
At the top of the order in the fifth, File singled up the middle and earned her second stolen base of the season before advancing to third on a single from Gordon. Redshirt senior Megan Good sent a sac fly to right to bring File home before Alexander sent a RBI double down the left field line. In similar fashion, Jubas sent the final run of the inning across the plate with a hit up the middle for a 9-5 lead.
Â
The Dukes used four hits to score six runs in the seventh as File garnered her third double of the game for a two-run shot to right center, giving JMU its final score of 15-5. Â
Â
Alexander started in the circle and sophomore Payton Buresch threw 1 1/3 innings before Good took over. Good earned her 18th win of the season after 5 1/3 innings in which she racked up 10 strikeouts while only giving up one hit.Â
QUOTING COACH LAPORTE
"I'm proud of the way our girls stayed composed and bounced back today. We had a slow start and gave Delaware too many chances, but Megan came in and did a great job in the circle. Our girls made adjustments after their first few at-bats and got the bats going to put runs on the board. I'm happy with how well our team has played in the regular season, but now it's time to focus on the CAA championship."Â
UP NEXT
