HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison Director of Athletics
Jeff Bourne announced the hiring of
Tony Morris as the head cheerleading coach on Thursday afternoon.Â

"Tony Morris brings a wealth of experience and fresh perspective to our cheerleading program at James Madison," Bourne said. "He has achieved at both the gameday and competitive aspects of a cheer program and, above all, has done so by exhibiting true care for his student-athletes and their collegiate experience. He has a keen focus on the fundamental skills of cheer and an overall recognition of the importance of the program in cultivating spirit and energy as they represent JMU. We are thrilled to welcome him aboard and excited to see the impact he will have on our student-athletes."

Morris comes to JMU with over 20 years of coaching experience at all levels, both sideline and all-star, while enhancing the fan experience and gameday atmosphere.Â

Morris comes from Upper Iowa where he was the head coach of the Peacock cheer program for the last five years. While in Iowa City, he was also a volunteer spirit team's coach the University of Iowa for Big 10 athletics events and NCAA tournaments.

Prior to serving in Iowa, Morris was the head cheer coach and spirit coordinator at Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas from 2012-14 where he was named the 2014 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KAC) Coach of the Year.Â

Before his stint at Tabor College, Morris spent 12 years teaching and coach high school competitive cheer at Perry High School in Georgia. Under his leadership, the Panthers won multiple regional championships and three state titles. Â

Morris earned his Master of Business Administration with a concentration in sports administration in 2018 at Upper Iowa. He received his Bachelor of Arts in liberal arts with an emphasis on early childhood education with a music endorsement in 2001.Â

JMU finished second in the All-Girl Game Day Division and 10th in the Small Coed Division I groups at the UCA College Nationals in Orlando last season.Â
