GREENVILLE, S.C. - The James Madison women's golf team posted its best round in more than a year on Sunday afternoon, climbing the leaderboard to finish 11th at the Lady Paladin Invitational, hosted by Furman at the par-72, 6,278-yard Furman University Golf Course.
On a difficult setup in Greenville, the Dukes carded a final-round 293 (+5), the fourth-lowest Sunday round in the field, to jump a pair of spots on the 16-team leaderboard and finish in sole possession of 11th. The performance marked the lowest team score for JMU since shooting 292 (+4) in the opening round of last season's William & Mary Invitational (Sept. 9, 2018), the first round of the year.
Sophomore
Kate Owens led the charge for the Dukes, tying for the fifth-lowest round in the field on Sunday with a 1-under 71, her lowest round of the year. The loop vaulted her 15 spots up the 90-player leaderboard and into a tie for 32nd at 226 (+10).
Senior
Lauren Comegys added her best round since last year's version of the Lady Paladin Invite, going around in even-par 72 to vault 15 places of her own and into a tie for 26th (225, +9), while freshman
Kendall Turner closed her weekend on stroke ahead and in sole possession of 25th (224, +8) after a final-round 74 (+2).
Sophomore
Carly Lyvers wrapped up the JMU scoring with a 76 (+4) on Sunday afternoon, taking home a tie for 60th, while senior
Jordan McKelvin finished tied for 68th (238=80-78-80).
QUOTING COACH BAKER
"Today was a great day. Coming into today, I said that if we shot 296, I'd be proud of this group. To beat that number by three, I couldn't be happier. We're going to get back and build on this back at home before getting back at it in Alabama next week."
UP NEXT
The Dukes will be back in action next week, heading to Silver Lakes Golf Course in Gadsden, Ala. to take part in the Chris Bannister Golf Classic on Oct. 7-8.
