QUICK HITS
- James Madison will cap its first Colonial Athletic Association road trip of the season on Saturday afternoon, when it closes out the southern swing with a 4 p.m. matchup at College of Charleston.
- The Dukes picked up their first CAA victory on Thursday evening in Wilmington, as they battled their way to a hard-fought 64-60 victory at UNCW to improve to 8-6 (1-2 CAA) at Trask Coliseum. Junior guard Matt Lewis tallied 15 points to lead the way, while junior forward Dwight Wilson notched his sixth double-double in seven games with 11 points and a season-high 15 boards.
- Heading into the Dukes' second CAA matchup, junior Matt Lewis leads the charge with 17.8 points per game, while junior Darius Banks is adding 12.7 points per contest and junior Dwight Wilson is averaging a double-double at 10.6 points and 10.9 boards.
- Lewis is currently the only player in the CAA that ranks inside the top 10 in all three of scoring average, rebounding average (6.5) and assists per game (4.1). He is also tied for second in the league in assist-turnover ratio at 1.8 with sophomore Deshon Parker.
- The Dukes were tabbed to finish fourth in the preseason poll of the league's coaches and media members, earning three first-place votes along the way in one of the closest preseason polls in league history.
- Heading into the season, JMU welcomed a six-member freshman class, including forward Michael Christmas, Dalton Jefferson and Julien Wooden, as well as guards Zyon Dobbs, Jayvis Harvey and Quinn Richey.
SCOUTING THE COUGARS
- After opening its 2019-20 campaign with only five wins in 11 games, the Cougars have reeled off four straight wins, including their first three CAA matchups, to enter Saturday's contest with a 9-6 (3-0 CAA) mark that has them atop the league standings.
- Senior guard Grant Riller, the CAA Preseason Player of the Year, has continued his scoring tear in 2019-20 and sits second in the league with 21.6 points per contest thus far. Junior guard Brevin Galloway adds 11.2ppg.
SERIES HISTORY
- Sunday's matchup at TD Arena is just the 15th between the two schools, with all but one contest coming since the Cougars joined the CAA prior to the 2013-14 season.
- The two teams each won on their home court last season, with the Dukes picking up a 69-58 victory in Harrisonburg on Jan. 5 to snap a five-game Charleston winning streak, before the Cougars won a 70-53 battle at TD Arena on Jan. 31. In all, the Dukes are just 2-5 on the Cougars' home court and are looking to snap a three-game losing streak at the venue.
- In last year's matchup in Charleston, the Dukes were down just 52-51 with 7:49 to play before the Cougars closed on an 18-2 run to seal the win. Then-sophomores Matt Lewis and Dwight Wilson each scored 12 points in the loss.
