COLLEGE PARK, Md. – James Madison women's basketball could not keep its offensive spark after the first quarter and dropped a 101-59 decision to No. 14/14 Maryland in non-conference action inside of the Xfinity Center on Saturday morning.
Â
The Dukes (4-3) stuck with the Terrapins (5-1, 1-0 Big Ten) throughout the first quarter and right before the media break in the second but Maryland caught fire and set off many scoring runs to keep JMU at bay.
Â
Freshman
Peyton McDaniel paced the Dukes with 14 points, knocking down a game-high four three-pointers to go along with four rebounds, two steals and an assist. Classmate
Jamia Hazell followed behind with 11 points, a trio of assists and three boards.
Â
Six Terrapins scored in double figures, led by Ashley Owusu with a game-high 19 points with eight rebounds, seven assists and two steals. Maryland shot a blistering 50.6 percent (39-of-77) from the field.
Â
How It Happened
The Dukes battled back-and-forth with the Terps in the first quarter to trail by three at the media break (12-9, 3:45). Coming out the break, JMU's defense hit another gear while the offensive sparked as well, sinking five straight shots including making six of their last eight to take a 19-16 lead after one.
Â
The second quarter was polar opposite to the first as Maryland caught a rhythm that could not be stopped. The Terrapins put up 29 points while holding the Dukes to just eight points to go into half with a 45-27 lead.
Â
The Dukes tried to answer in the third but the Terps' offensive continued to dominate as they shot 70.5 percent (12-of-17) in the quarter to limit any hopes of JMU making a comeback. Maryland's momentum carried through the rest of the game, handing JMU a 101-59 non-conference finale loss.
