BLACKSBURG, Va. - James Madison women's tennis competed in its third match of the dual season Saturday, taking down Winthrop in a 6-1 neutral-site victory at Virginia Tech's Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.Â
JMU won two of three doubles matches and five singles matches, including the final four, to improve to 2-1 on the season. The Eagles dropped to 0-3 on the year and 0-2 against Colonial Athletic Association teams.
The sophomore tandem of Kylie Moulin and Amanda Nord began the match with a 6-0 win on court three over Angela Georgieva and Samantha Nanere. The Dukes clinched the doubles point with a win on court one, as sophomores Daniela Voloh and Natalia Nikolopoulou beat Alisa Soloveva and Rafaela Santos 6-2, giving JMU the early 1-0 lead.
Nikolopoulou cruised in singles play as well, taking down Nanere at the #5 spot by scores of 6-1, 6-2. After Winthrop made it a 2-1 match with a win at #1 singles, sophomore Daria Afanasyeva put the Dukes ahead 3-1 with a 7-6 (4), 6-2 win against Santos on court two. Nord secured the team win on court six with a 6-3, 7-6 (3) triumph against Georgieva.Â
With the match in hand, JMU also notched wins at #3 and #4 singles to conclude the 6-1 win. Voloh rallied past Tayla Van Eck with a 11-9 super-tiebreaker victory, taking the match by scores of 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (9). Moulin also rallied to force a third set against Alexandra Ferreira Da Silva, ultimately winning 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.Â
