KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - James Madison women's golf opened competition against its biggest field of the year on Sunday, closing out the opening round of the Kiawah Island Classic, hosted by College of Charleston at the historic Kiawah Island Resort.
The Dukes opened their week on the par-72, 5,964-yard Osprey Point course, one of two courses in play to accommodate the massive 53-team, 264-player field, posting an opening-round 303 (+15) to close the day in the top half of the field, tied for 21st.
Only 11 teams shot +8 or better to open the event, nine of which played the Osprey Point course alongside the Dukes.
Sophomore
Carly Lyvers led the way on the afternoon, opening the event with a 74 (+2) that was just one stroke off her collegiate best and put her in a tie for 48th. Fellow sophomore
Kate Owens sits just one stroke behind in a tie for 68th after a Sunday 75 (+3).
Senior
Lauren Comegys continued the line with her own round of 76 (+4) to close the day in a tie for 87th, followed by freshmen
Kendall Turner (78 | t123) and
Ana Tsiros (79 | t140) to close out the JMU scoring.
Senior
Morgan Cox is playing this week as an entrant into a 15-player individual competition on the par-72, 6,031-yard Cougar Point course. She opened her week with an opening-round 78 that put her tied for third.

"We had a solid start to this event. It's good for us to see this kind of field and know that we have to be mentally tough for all 18 holes to compete the way we want to. We'll need to come out tomorrow on a new course and be focused from the start."
