HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison split the second day of the JMU Invitational on Saturday, Mar. 7, defeating Siena 10-2 in six innings and falling to UConn 12 – 2 in five innings. The Dukes move to a record of 11-6 on the season.
GAME 1
Junior
Michelle Sullivan racked up four RBIs to help propel the James Madison softball team over the Siena Saints 10-2 on Saturday.
Alexis Bermudez (5-0) started in the circle and picked up the win for JMU (11-5). The right-hander went six innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on three hits, allowing two walks and striking out one.
Sullivan went 2-for-3 with a double in addition to her four RBIs for the Dukes. Senior
Kate Gordon compiled a standout performance as well, going 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, a walk and two RBIs. Junior
Lynsey Meeks also helped out for JMU, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and two RBIs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the second inning the Dukes got on the board first. JMU's offense started clicking and put up four runs, starting with a two-run double off the bat of Sullivan. Gordon followed with another double through the right side to bring in Sullivan.
Sara Jubas added the third double of the inning to bring in Gordon.
The Saints failed to push any runs across before the Dukes offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. JMU scored once on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore
Hannah Shifflett, which brought the score to 5-0 in favor of the Dukes.
JMU kept Siena without a run before building their lead to 6-0 in the fifth inning with an RBI single off the bat of Sullivan.
The Saints gained ground, closing the gap to 6-2 until JMU added some insurance in the sixth. The Dukes scored four runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Meek. Sullivan ended the game in the sixth inning with sacrifice fly that brought
Madison Naujokas home, bringing the Dukes to a 10-2 victory.

Madison Naujokas, who went 1-for-2 on the day with a triple and two RBIs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dukes got on the board immediately, starting their scoring in the first inning. Naujokas sent a triple to center field brought
Hannah File and Jubas, giving JMU the 2-0 lead. The Dukes were unable to hold the lead, as UConn scored 5 times in the second and third innings. The Huskies added two more runs to their lead in the four innings to win the game in five innings. over the remaining four innings to grab the 12-2 win.

"We started the day strong and battled at the plate," said Coach LaPorte. "We could not keep the focus through the second game. We had hiccups that the team was not able to bounce back from. We need to keep the focus on both the offense and the defense tomorrow as we play Siena and Cal."
