Kamiah Smalls of James Madison women's basketball has signed a professional contract to play in Italy for the 2020-21 season as announced by the team on Monday morning.

"I'm thanking God for all these blessings," Smalls said. "I'm thanking my family, friends and every community that has given me unconditional support. Signing a contract to make one of the best places in Italy my new home was one of the most nerve wrecking/exciting moments of my life!"

Smalls signed with USE Basket Rosa Scotti, a team in the Serie A1 Women's league. She is set to report in Empoli, Italy in the final week of August. The season is slated to begin on Oct. 14 and could last through April.

"She has great offensive potential and comes from a good college where she had an important last year," head coach Alessio Cioni said. "Player of the year in the league, she will wear the number 3."

The 2019-20 Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year and All-CAA First Team selection posted a dominant career at JMU as she departs to play professionally with her name in nine all-time top-10 lists.

She finished fourth in points (1,888), fifth in field goals made (686), fifth in three-pointers made (188), fifth in scoring average (14.5), tenth in free throws made (328), seventh in free throw percentage (80.2), eighth in three-point percentage (34.3), ninth in games played (130) and third in games started (125).

"With this being set in stone as my first professional team and actually having the signed contract to go with it, I'm beyond grateful for their belief in my ability and seeing the potential in what I can bring to their team!" Smalls added.

For her career she is a three-time All-CAA First Team selection, two-time CAA Preseason Player of the Year, was the unanimous CAA Rookie of the Year in 2016-17 and also made the CAA All-Rookie Team.

In her final season with the Dukes, she finished the year averaging 18.6 points per game, second in the CAA while shooting 47.1 percent (187-of-397) from the field, good for the fourth-best percentage in conference.

At the conclusion of a dominant 2019-20 campaign, Smalls led the team in points (538), points per game (18.6), assists (83), assists per game (3.6) and free-throw percentage (87.4). She scored in double figures in 27 games, dropped 20-plus points 15 times and recorded four double-doubles including three 20-point, 10-rebound double-doubles.
