- The James Madison Dukes will return to action for the first time in nearly two weeks on Sunday evening, when they welcome Morgan State to the Atlantic Union Bank Center for a 6 p.m. non-conference matchup.
- The Dukes were originally scheduled to open their Colonial Athletic Association schedule this weekend along with the rest of the league, but a positive COVID-19 test in the Towson program forced the postponement of those two games.
- Heading into this week, the Dukes are currently 3-3 on the season, having picked up a 98-55 win over Alice Lloyd before dropping an 82-81 heartbreaker to VCU iin their final game before the holiday break.
- Seniors Matt Lewis and Zach Jacobs return to lead a new-look JMU squad that welcomes 10 newcomers and returns just five players from last season's 9-21 campaign that saw the Dukes go 2-16 in league play.Â
- Lewis is averaging 21.2 points per contest through the opening six games, while newcomer guard Vado Morse is adding 15.5 ppg with the help of a 42.6% clip (12-of-26) from three and sophomore forward Julien Wooden chips in 9.5ppg.
- The Dukes' freshmen are off to strong starts, with forward Justin Amadi tallying 7.8ppg/3.7rpg through the opening month, while Terell Strickland is posting 4.3p/3.7r/3.3a/2.7s and Terrence Edwards is at 7.2p/5.0r/2.5a already.
SCOUTING THE BEARS
- Morgan State will bring a roster loaded with experience to Harrisonburg, with five juniors in the Bears' last starting lineup and a rotation that features only brief appearances by a pair of sophomores outside of upperclassmen. KenPom currently ranks MSU as the 29th most experienced team in Division I this season.
- Junior forward Troy Baxter powers the Bears' offense, racking up 16.8 points and 4.6 rebounds with the help of a 51.8% clip from the floor, the 10th-best mark in the country. Junioirs Lagio Grantsaan and Malik Miller each add 13.8 points per contest.
SERIES HISTORY
- The Dukes have faced Morgan State nine times in program history, but the most recent matchup came all the way back on Dec. 22, 2001, in an 84-66 JMU victory in Harrisonburg.
- This will be the ninth consecutive time that the two teams have met in Harrisonburg, with only the initial meeting on March 12, 1976 taking place on a neutral court. That matchup, in the second round of the NCAA Division II Regional, saw the Bears knock off JMU in an 86-81 decision.
- JMU leads the all-time series by an 8-1 margin, having won all eight contests since that first meeting.
- Coach Mark Byington has never faced Morgan State as a head coach.
