HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison volleyball dropped a 3-0 (23-25, 20-25, 25-27) decision at Hofstra to wrap up the regular season on Sunday.
JMU fell to 17-7 overall, finishing in a tie for second in the conference with Elon at 11-5, while Hofstra improved to 14-13 overall and finished 8-8 in league play.
Sophomore
Miëtte Veldman finished off another 13 kills, becoming the first player with over 300 kills in a season since Bryn Recker and M'Kaela White did so in 2018. Junior
Sophia Davis and sophomore
Elizabeth Helmich each had six total blocks, as the Dukes finished with 12.0 for the match.
Both teams reached 20 points in every set for the weekend.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
A back-and-forth set saw both teams deadlocked at 13, before a 5-0 JMU run gave the Dukes an 18-13 lead. Hofstra rallied with nine of 12 to grab a 22-21 advantage. After consecutive blocks allowed the Dukes to regain a 23-22 lead, the Pride rattled off the final three points of the set to win 25-23.
Second Set
With the set even at six, the Pride won seven of nine points to take a 13-8 edge. The Dukes were unable to comeback, trading points with the Pride the rest of the way, as Hofstra grabbed the 2-0 match lead with a 25-20 victory.
Third Set
Hofstra took a 10-5 lead, but the Dukes came back quickly, winning six of seven points to tie the set at 11. After Hofstra rebuilt a 19-15 cushion, the Dukes went on a 6-0 run to take a 21-19 lead, their first of the set since leading 1-0. However, Hofstra responded with five of seven to set up match point up 24-23. JMU fought off two set points and squared the set at 25, but were unable to fend off a third, as the Pride wrapped up a match victory with an ace to win 27-25.
