ELON, N.C. - Elon forward Bethany Harford stole a pass and scored a long goal in the second minute of overtime on Sunday afternoon to hand James Madison a heartbreaking 1-0 loss in Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer action at Rudd Field.
Â
The Dukes (0-2-1, 0-1 CAA) dominated possession throughout, racking up a 12-4 advantage in shots and taking four corner kicks to the Phoenix' (2-1, 1-1 CAA) none, but could not find the target across the opening 90 minutes, setting the stage for Elon's winner.
Â
After controlling the first half, the Dukes pushed even further after the break, outshooting Elon by an 8-1 margin in the second period, including a fury of four in six minutes just past the hour mark, but could not break through before the Phoenix scored on their first shot of the golden goal period.
Â
Junior
Annie Sorando led the way for the JMU offense, tallying five shots on the day, while senior
Sophie Brause had three and freshmen
Lidia Nduka and
Lexi Vanderlinden each added two. Sophomore goalkeeper
Melissa Hoffheins had a pair of saves for the Dukes.

QUOTING COACH WALTERS
"That is probably the most control we've had over a game since I've been at JMU; I'm absolutely devastated for the girls not to get a result. It's tough in a game of soccer - sometimes one mistake and the best team doesn't win. I feel like that game was 1,000 times better than our game against Towson, even though we were missing so many players. I am proud of the soccer this team played today!"
