Elon, N.C. – James Madison volleyball (5-2, 4-1 CAA) battled with Elon (5-3, 4-1 CAA), winning the third set after going down 2-0, but came up short falling 3-1 Wednesday afternoon in the Schar Center.
Miëtte Veldman and
Caroline Dozier each recorded double-doubles. Veldman tabbed her fifth of the season with 19 kills and 18 digs while adding on one service ace. Dozier recorded her fourth of the season with 41 assists and 18 digs along with two blocks.
Elizabeth Helmich tied her season- high of 12 kills, hitting at a .303 clip. At the net she recorded five blocks for the Dukes.
Sophie Davis led the Dukes on defense, recording seven of JMU's 11 blocks. She also added eight kills for the team.
Savannah Marshall recorded a career-high of 28 digs against Elon, making crucial plays throughout the match.
Set 1
Marshall opened the set with a service ace, her only of the match, getting a 3-0 run started for the Dukes. JMU capitalized on multiple attacking errors by Elon which helped them keep a 10-7 lead. The Phoenix bounced back tying the set up at 16-16.
Davis was a wall at the net recording five blocks for JMU to help keep JMU in the set.
Savanah Cockrill threw down a kill to tie the set up at 20-20, and Veldman followed with one of her own down the middle to give JMU the lead over Elon. JMU could not keep the lead as they had multiple errors that allowed Elon to keep close. Haylie Clark hit the kill that gave Elon the 26-24 victory over JMU.
Veldman led the Dukes with five kills and five digs. Helmich recorded two kills and three blocks.
Set 2
Elon took an early lead in the set, 16-8, capitalizing on multiple errors by JMU. The Dukes took a timeout to gather themselves and
Liv Crawley returned to the court to hit her first kill of the match. Helmich followed with an ace to cut Elon's lead, 16-11.
The Dukes went on 6-0 run late in the set, fired by two kills from Cockrill and a service ace from Veldman to tie the match at 20-20. Helmich recorded back-to-back kills to give JMU the 23-21 lead over Elon. The Phoenix fought back to tie the Dukes at 27-27, but Veldman threw down another kill to keep the lead for JMU. Elon took advantage of an attacking error by JMU and sent down a kill to capture the set 30-28 to lead JMU 2-0 in the match.
Veldman record six kills and five digs, while Marshall recorded eight digs.
Set 3
JMU fell behind early trailing 4-6, but fought back with the help of kills by Dozier, Helmich and Veldman to tie Elon at 9-9. The teams each made multiple errors, keeping the match at 14-14.
JMU capitalized on a Phoenix error to start a 7-0 run to take a 20-15 lead. Veldman threw down two kills during the Dukes' run. JMU had three consecutive kills from three different Dukes, pushing them to a 24-17 lead. Elon fought back, but Helmich ended the set with a kill down the side to give JMU the 25-20 win to trail 2-1 to Elon.
Marshall finished the set with eight digs while Dozier and Veldman each recorded five. Dozier tabbed 10 assists while Veldman had five kills.
Set 4
The Dukes went down early, but put together a 4-0 run to take an 8-7 lead over Elon. During JMU's run Davis recorded two kills. JMU capitalized on errors made by the Phoenix to give themselves the lead, 11-9.
The Dukes had offensive errors that allowed the Phoenix to stay in the set, tying it at 19-19. The teams traded kills with each getting one away from set point. Wilmoth slammed a kill that tied the match up at 25 each, but Elon responded with two kills of their own to win the set 27-25 and the match 3-1.
