HARRISONBURG, Va. – Sophomore
Eveline Zwager scored the game-winning goal in the fourth quarter to push James Madison over Delaware, 2-1 in Colonial Athletic Association field hockey action at the JMU Field Hockey Complex on Tuesday evening.
The Blue Hens (2-3, 1-2 CAA) took the 1-0 lead in the second quarter off a penalty corner but three minutes later, Zwager netted her first goal of the game for the Dukes (4-1, 4-0 CAA) off a chip shot from a nice pass by sophomore
Courtney Lynch.
In the final period, JMU battled hard and earned a penalty corner with less than eight minutes remaining. Off the insert, Zwager made a quick pass to classmate
Morgan Merritt who forced back a strong pass to find a diving Zwager that tipped the ball past Delaware's goalkeeper for the win.
Zwager recorded her first multi-goal game this season as she racked up four points on the day, scoring her third and fourth goals of the season. Both Lynch and Merritt recorded their first assists of the season. Freshman
Brandelynn Heinbaugh stayed solid in goal as she recorded two saves on the day to improve to 4-1 on the year.
The win breaks a six-year losing streak against the Blue Hens dating back to October 4, 2015 where JMU took down Delaware, 2-1 in overtime in Newark, Del. This is the first home win over Delaware since the 1-0 shutout win on October 28, 2011.
