WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – James Madison baseball (7-11, 4-5 Colonial Athletic Association) fell in both games of the doubleheader to William & Mary (11-19, 8-7 CAA) on Sunday afternoon at Plumeri Park. The Dukes fell 10-3 in game one before dropping a heartbreaking game two, 1-0. Game one was prematurely ended on April 25 and was resumed at the beginning of the bottom of the seventh on May 18.
Â
Justin Showalter and Hunter Entsminger started for JMU in game one and two, respectively. At the plate, Conor Hartigan led the Dukes by going a combined 4-for-7 with an RBI.
Â
Game 1
The game started quiet, with neither team scoring through the first two frame. The Dukes took a 1-0 lead in the third as Fox Semones laced a two-out double into right field and was brought home the next at bat on a single from Hartigan. The Tribe responded strongly, scoring three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-1 lead into the sixth inning.
Â
JMU began to mount a comeback in the seventh, as Trevon Dabney led off the inning with a walk. Mason Dunaway was then hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second, and was followed by a fielder's choice to give Chase DeLauter runners on the corners with two down. The redshirt freshman would deliver, singling in Dabney to make it 6-2. Semones would then hit his second double of the game to score a run and make it 6-3, before the game was prematurely ended after the top of the seventh. Once the game was resumed, the Tribe scored once in the seventh and three in the eighth to take the game 10-3.
Â
Game 2
The second game started off quiet as well, as the teams combined for only five hits through the first four innings. The Tribe were able to score the first run of the game on back-to-back doubles in the fifth, making it 1-0.
Â
Neither team would be able to get much going for the remainder of the game, as both team's offenses were stymied by the opposition's pitching staff. The Dukes were able to get runners on in the sixth, but were retired in order the following two frames. Lliam Grubbs came in for relief for JMU in the sixth and only allowed one baserunner for the remainder of the game. The sole baserunner was then picked off by catcher Michael Morgan.
Â
Kyle Novak was able to knock a base hit in the top of the ninth to represent the tying run, but a double play the next batter ended the game in favor of the hosts.
Â
UP NEXT
The Dukes will be returning home for the first time in almost a month, welcoming Saint Joseph's for a doubleheader on Sunday, May 2. The first game is scheduled for 12 p.m.
