JMU Shuts Out Charleston in Saturday Doubleheader

CHARLESTON, S.C. – No. 23/24 James Madison softball shuts out College of Charleston in the series doubleheader, on Saturday afternoon. Alissa Humphrey tossed a no-hitter in JMU's 8-0 win in six innings followed by Odicci Alexander recording a perfect game in the circle, the first of her career, in JMU's 9-0 win in five innings over the Cougars.
JMU moved to a record of 29-1, 16-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play extending their winning streak to 19 games, while College of Charleston moved to a record of 6-34, 0-17 in the CAA.
Lynsey Meeks finished the doubleheader with a on base percentage of 1.000 as she drew six walks in the two games and went 1-for-1 at the plate. She drew in three runners and scored one run for the Dukes. Sara Jubas went 4-for-6 at the plate scoring four runs for JMU while drawing two walks. Madison Naujokas showed off her speed on the bases as she went 3-for-3 on stolen bases putting her at 56 and took over the second spot on JMU's career top 10 list.
Alexander put together a spectacular day with her first career perfect game striking out 14 of the 15 batters she faced. At the plate, she recorded two hits one being a two-run home run in the second game against the Cougars.
Game 1
JMU took the lead in the top of the first and never gave it up. Kate Gordon hit a leadoff single up the middle that was followed by another base hit off the bat of Jubas. The runners moved into scoring positions off a wild pitch from Charleston. Naujokas hit a sacrifice fly out to left field to bring in Gordon giving JMU the 1-0 lead.
The teams remained scoreless through the next inning before JMU did more damage in the top of the third. Jubas recorded a leadoff single to right field to get the momentum started that was followed by another base hit from Logan Newton. Naujokas reached on a fielder's choice that helped Jubas move to third. Naujokas quickly got into scoring position as she stole second. Meeks launched a single up the middle to bring in the runners increasing the Dukes' lead to 3-0 over the Cougars.
In the top of the fourth, Michelle Sullivan hit a leadoff single to center to get on base for the Dukes. Gordon hit a double to right for the first extra base hit of the game. Naujokas brought her teammates across home plate with a single to center giving JMU a 5-0 lead over Charleston.
JMU went to work again in the top of the fifth that was started by a triple off the bat of Sullivan, her second of the season. Newton hit a single up the middle that brought in Sullivan making the score 6-0. Naujokas followed with another RBI single to help score the final run of the frame to give JMU the 7-0 lead over Charleston.
Sullivan did more damage in the top of the sixth as she hit a RBI single to left field, bringing in the final run for JMU.
Humphrey  (12-0) recorded her third no-hitter of the season, becoming the first Duke to recorded three no-hitters in a single season. She tossed seven strikeouts while only walking two batters.
Game 2
Jubas got the momentum going in the top of the first for the Dukes with a single to left field that was followed by Newton's own base hit. With two on base, Naujokas drew a walk to load the bases. Meeks and Alexander each recorded walks and a RBI to give JMU a 2-0 lead. Emily Phillips brought in the final run of the frame for the Dukes with a sacrifice fly out to left field.

Alexander immediately went to work in the bottom frame, striking out three batters to get the Dukes back to the batter's box.
The team's remained scoreless through the second, but JMU broke the silence as they pushed two runs off one hit in the top of the third. Alexander hit a two RBI home run to left, her first homer of the season, to increase JMU's lead to 5-0 over Charleston.
In the top of the fourth, Hallie Hall came in as a pinch hitter and drew a leadoff for the Dukes. Gordon and Jubas each followed with base hits to load the bases. Newton hit a single to third base, recording her 100th career hit and helping Hall cross home plate. Naujokas reached first on a fielder's choice but was able to drive in Gordon on third base increasing JMU's lead to 7-0.
Naujokas kept her momentum going stealing second, her third steal of the doubleheader. Meeks drew a walk to load the bases again for JMU and was followed Alexander drawing a walk allowing Naujokas to touch home plate. With the bases loaded and two outs, Phillips launched a RBI single to right field making the final score 9-0.
Alexander (8-0) tossed 11 consecutive strikeouts for the Dukes, finishing the game with 14 to record her fourth game of double-digit strikeouts. She picked up her eighth win in the circle, first no-hitter and first perfect game of her career.
