HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison baseball (11-15, 6-9 CAA) came back from an early deficit to walk off in the 11
th inning of a back-and-forth thriller as the Dukes took down William & Mary (13-27, 10-14 CAA), 10-9, as part of Senior Day on Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park.
Â
Chase DeLauter came in from the outfield to throw three innings of relief and pick up his first collegiate win.
Carson Bell led the Dukes at the plate, becoming the first JMU player to hit for the cycle since Conner Brown on April 20, 2013 against Georgia State. Bell finished 4-for-6 with a run scored and four RBIs.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Â
The Tribe got out to an early lead, striking first in the first inning by scoring twice. They then extended their lead to 3-0 with a run in the fourth. The Dukes began to cut into the lead in the sixth as the first two batters for JMU reached and were advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by
Michael Morgan. Bell then stepped up and doubled into left field to score both runners and make it 3-2. A two-run homer in the top of the seventh gave William & Mary a three-run lead again at 5-2.
Â
Nick Zona answered in the bottom half of the inning by leading off with his first career home run to make it 5-3.
Chase DeLauter followed him with a double off the left field wall, moved to third on a wild pitch, and then was brought home to make it 5-4 on a
Conor Hartigan groundout. JMU then took the lead, 6-5, in the bottom of the eighth when
Michael Morgan led off with a double and was followed by Bell who hit a no doubt home run to right field. The Dukes added an insurance run with an RBI single from Hartigan.
Â
The Tribes first three batters in the top of the ninth all reached base, tying the game at seven-all. DeLauter then came in and induced a double play and a three-pitch strikeout to get out of the inning. JMU would put the winning run on third in the bottom half of the inning, as Bell hit a one-out triple, but he couldn't be brought in so the game headed for extra innings.
Â
The teams decided to use the international tie breaker rule in extra innings, starting each inning with a runner on second. Both teams scored in the 10th inning to send the game to an 11
th inning, the Tribe on a sacrifice fly and the Dukes on a Hartigan single. William & Mary then took a 9-8 lead on a double in its half of the 11
th.
Â
Dallas Jackson, who came in as a defensive replacement when DeLauter went to pitch, led off with
Kyle Novak placed at second and reached on a bunt single to put runners on the corners. Morgan then laced a single into right field to tie the game at nine by scoring Novak. Bell then came up and completed the cycle, hitting an infield single to shortstop to load the bases with no outs for
Mason Dunaway. Dunaway then flew out to right field, with Jackson tagging up and scoring the winning run at 10-9.
