HARRISONBURG, Va. – Three former James Madison student-athletes are set to compete in the 2020 Olympics, held in Tokyo from July 23-Aug. 8.
Â
Leading the way for the Dukes in the Olympics is a two-time qualifier in archery,
Jacob Wukie,
while
Jazmon Gwathmey and
Jackie Benitez will play in the Olympics for the first time, representing Puerto Rico in women's basketball.
Â
Wukie, representing the United States, participated in the 2012 Olympic Games held in London, where he helped the United States earn the silver medal in the Men's Team competition. Individually, Wukie finished 17th.
Â
Wukie was a junior on the 2007 JMU men's team that won the national collegiate championship in the final year that the school fielded an intercollegiate archery team. He finished second individually in the national tournament - losing to teammate
Nathan McCullough in the finals - and earned All-American honors. Wukie placed third individually in the 2006 national collegiate tournament.
Â
Gwathmey was a huge help in leading Puerto Rico to qualification for its first-ever Olympics, as she was named to the All-Star team of the Women's Olympic Qualifying tournament held in Bourges, France in February. More recently, Gwathmey played a crucial role in Puerto Rico's silver medal run at the 2021 Women's AmeriCup in Puerto Rico.
Â
She played for the Dukes from 2012-2016 and placed her name all over the record books. She sits third all-time in career blocks (173), sixth in games played (136), sixth in games started (120) and ninth in field goals made (581), a mark that includes the third-most buckets in a single season (251, 2015-16).
Â
Gwathmey led the Dukes to three CAA Championships, earning CAA Championship Most Outstanding Player honors for all three title runs. In her final season, she was named the CAA Player of the Year and earned a spot on the CAA All-Defensive Team for the second time in her career.
Â
Benitez will join Gwathmey on the Puerto Rico team in Tokyo. The two have played together for their country already, as Benitez was also a member of the team that battled to the end against the United States in the 2021 Women's AmeriCup Championship game.
Â
Benitez transferred to JMU to play her final two seasons of collegiate ball from 2018-2020. In her first season with JMU, she earned the CAA Sixth Player of the Year award and was named to the All-CAA Third Team. The following season, Benitez landed on the All-CAA Second Team after averaging 13.4 points (second-most on the team) and 1.6 steals per game (led the team).
Â
With Gwathmey and Benitez earning a spot in the Olympics, JMU has now had at least nine athletes that have qualified for the Olympics –
Desi Wynter (Track & Field),
Tiombe Hurd (Track & Field),
Juli Speights Henner (Track & Field),
Carol Thate (Field Hockey),
Corky Julien (Women's Soccer),
Eva Hannesdottir (Swimming & Diving) and Wukie.
Â
Coverage of archery begins on July 23 and Puerto Rico will play its first game on July 27 against China in group play.
