Koons, Karpinski Advance to Doubles Final at UNCW Invitational

WILMINGTON, N.C. – James Madison men's tennis continued play at the Jersey Mike's UNCW Invitational on Saturday, as the Dukes notched four singles wins and four doubles victories at Porters Neck Country Club.

The day was highlighted by the team of junior Holden Koons and senior William Karpinski advancing to the doubles draw final with a pair of victories. The duo opened Saturday with a 6-4 win against UNCW's Davide Innocenti and Bekhzod Rasamatov. They followed that up by rolling past the #2 seeded doubles team of ETSU's Juan Jose Vargas and Francisco Lamas, 6-1.

Koons and Karpinski will meet Youngstown State's Erik Gran and Harry Fouzas in Sunday's doubles title match.

The Dukes also picked up two more doubles wins, as senior Stefan Petrovic and freshman Mathieu Josserand downed JMU's Mario Pena and UNCG's David Flisberg in a tight match at 7-6(5). Sophomore Oscar Hernandez and redshirt freshman Youssef Sadek also advanced through the consolation bracket with a walkover win.

In singles play, Koons claimed a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Fouzas, while Karpinski outlasted Vargas in three sets by scores of 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, setting up a JMU versus JMU matchup in Sunday's Flight A consolation final.

Freshmen Sadek and Josserand picked up their first career singles victory, as Sadek took down UNCG's David Flisberg, 6-1, 6-3, and Josserand beat UNCG's Callum Theaker, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
