Herzig Named Easton/ NFCA Division I Assistant Coach of the Year

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - James Madison associate head coach Jennifer Herzig was named the Easton/ National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division I Assistant Coach of the Year, the association announced Tuesday afternoon.

Herzig is in her 10th season with the JMU softball program. She was hired as an assistant coach in 2012 and was promoted in July 2018 to associate head coach. During her nine seasons with the Dukes, they have compiled a 385-90 record and have had eight NCAA Championship berths.

As the Dukes' hitting coach and pitch caller, Herzig helped lead JMU on their historic 2021 season, reaching the semifinals in the program's first ever Women's College World Series appearance, with an overall record of 41-4.Â

The Dukes started off postseason play winning both the Colonial Athletic Association South Division regular season title, as well as their sixth CAA Championship, leading them to the NCAA Knoxville Regional. In Knoxville, JMU went 3-0, defeating No. 9 Tennessee and No. 25 Liberty twice to claim a spot in the Columbia Super Regional. The Duke's continued their winning performance, winning their first and third games at the Super Regional to punch their ticket to the WCWS.

JMU maintained their strong performance at the WCWS, beating both No. 1 Oklahoma and No. 5 Oklahoma State in the first two games of the 2021 WCWS. This run was the first time a non-seeded team won its first two games of the series.

The Dukes coaching staff has received the NFCA Northeast Regional Coaching Staff of the Year award five times during Herzig's career along with the 2021 NFCA National Coaching Staff of the Year award.

JMU closed the 2021 campaign ranking seventh in the nation for home runs per game (1.58), sixth in slugging percentage (.562), second in win loss percentage (.911) and ninth in ERA. (1.79).
