Dukes Drop Heartbreaker to No. 4 Iowa

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – After wrapping up the first quarter with a 1-0 lead, James Madison was held without a shot for the remainder of the game as No. 4 Iowa scored two late goals to top the Dukes, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex.

JMU falls to 7-5, recording its second consecutive loss. Iowa improves to 10-3 (3-2 Big Ten) as it prepares to take on Ohio State on Friday, Oct. 14.

Senior Mikenna Allen scored the Dukes' lone goal of the day off an assist from classmate Eveline Zwager. Junior Brandelynn Heinbaugh recorded a career-high eight saves against the nationally-ranked Hawkeyes.

How It Happened
The Dukes will return to Harrisonburg, Va. for Senior Day as they host Wake Forest on Oct. 16. The contest is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.

How It Happened
- Freshman Alice Roeper intercepted a pass on the defensive end and moved the ball quickly to Zwager who connected with Allen for a fast-break goal with 5:35 remaining in the first quarter.
- James Madison had three corners in the opening frame but could not convert.
- Iowa broke through on a penalty corner to tie the game with 9:53 to go in the contest.Â
- The Hawkeyes struck again a few minutes later, which proved to be the gamewinner.
- Iowa held the advantage in shots (11-4), shots on goal (10-1), and penalty corners 5-3).
- The Hawkeyes lead in the all-time series with a 5-2 ledger.
- Heinbaugh has recorded five or more saves five times this season, including the past three games. The junior has tallied 20 saves across her last three outings.
- James Madison was held without a shot for the final three quarters of the game.
- Four of JMU's five losses have been decided by one goal. Those four losses were all against ranked teams, two of which ended in overtime.
- Allen's goal was her first since the season-opening match against Richmond on Aug. 26.
- Zwager has registered an assist in three straight games for the first time this season and second in her career.Â
