RICHMOND, Va.. – James Madison men's tennis wrapped up play at the River City Tennis Open (Oct. 7-9), with the team capturing 14 total wins at the University of Richmond's Westhampton Courts and Collegiate School's Williams-Bollettieri Tennis Center.
The Dukes won eight singles matches while claiming six doubles victories in an event that was played with a hidden-dual format. Friday and Saturday were played at Westhampton Courts and Sunday was played at the Williams-Bollettieri Tennis Center.
Edson Sanchez and
Julian Lozano led the Dukes with 2-1 singles records and a 3-0 doubles mark while teaming together.
Youssef Sadek also won four matches, going 3-0 in doubles play while teaming
Canon Secord twice and
Aathreya Mahesh once.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Friday, Oct. 7 – Doubles and Singles vs. Navy
JMU opened the weekend taking two of three doubles matches and four of six singles bouts against Navy.
Lozano and Sanchez won a tight match in tiebreak fashion, sliding past Aniketh Ayinala and Herrick Legaspi, 8-7 (5). Sadek and Mahesh also picked up an 8-3 win against Nathan and Nicholas Nguyen.
In singles play, Lozano downed J.J. Etterbeek by a 6-1, 6-4 margin. Sanchez followed with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph versus Ayinala.
Mario Pena defeated Christian Pumpelly, 6-2, 6-3, while Mahesh rounded out the day with a 7-6 (4), 6-2 victory.
Saturday, Oct. 8 – Doubles and Singles vs. Mason, Doubles vs. Richmond/Georgetown
The Dukes began day two taking two of three doubles matches and three of six singles matches against George Mason.
Lozano and Sanchez cruised past Monil Lotlikar and Rithik Sardana, 8-3, while Sadek and Secord held off Rishab Sardana and Niza Simunyola, 8-6.
In singles versus the Patriots, Sadek collected a 6-2, 6-2 win against Lotlikar. Lozano rallied past Rishab Sardana, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, and Secord earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Herman Jentoft.
The Dukes continued with additional doubles matches against Richmond and Georgetown, taking two of three.
Lozano and Sanchez capped off their 3-0 weekend with another 8-3 win versus Georgetown's Kieran Foster and Adhvyte Sharma. Sadek and Secord also won by a score of 8-3 against Richmond's Davis Wiley and Sebastian Miano.
Sunday, Oct. 9 – Singles vs. Delaware/Campbell
The Dukes closed the weekend with one singles win, as Sanchez rallied for a narrow victory against Campbell's Lukas Steffen. He won the match by scores of 6-7 (5), 7-6 (4), 6-4.
Lozano also lost a tough three-set battle to Luis Molina from Delaware, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, while UD and Campbell combined for three more straight-set wins.

JMU is off next week before traveling to Charlottesville, Va. on Oct. 19-24 for the ITA Atlantic Regional Championship.
