DANBURY, Conn. — James Madison redshirt junior Alexandra Blom was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year and earned a spot on the All-ECAC First Team, while classmate Brittany Munson was tabbed to the Second Team, as the ECAC announced its Division I women's soccer honors Friday morning.Â
Â
Blom becomes the program's first ECAC major award winner in addition to her and Munson being the first Dukes selected to All-ECAC teams since Corky Julien in 2009.Â
Â
The major award honor is just another accolade from this season for the Degerfors, Sweden native, having already been named the Sun Belt Conference Goalkeeper of the Year and earning All-Sun Belt and All-Southeast Region First Team recognitions. Blom played in and started 18 matches, compiling 1,641:52 minutes in goal. Nationally, she ranks 11th in save percentage at 0.866 with 71 saves and sits at 15th in goals against average at 0.60. Her goals against average is a single-season program record, as she also fell one shy of tying the program record for solo shutouts in a season with nine.
Â
Munson played in all 21 matches in the campaign and made 20 starts. The defender has also had a busy postseason, as she has earned All-Sun Belt First Team and All-Southeast Region Second Team honors. The Merrick, N.Y. native helped anchor a back line that recorded 13 shutouts to set the program record and only twice allowed multiple goals in a match. In addition, the defense also tied the program record for consecutive shutouts of four twice and set the program record for consecutive minutes without conceding a goal at 475:31. Munson led the Dukes to be ranked nationally in save percentage (fifth, 0.872), shutout percentage (T-sixth, 0.619) and goals against average (ninth, 0.560). The Dukes were one of 16 teams to only allow 12 or less goals this season.Â
Â
Blom and Munson helped the Dukes to a 12-4-5 record and leading the team to a fourth-seed in the conference tournament and an appearance in the championship match in their first season in the Sun Belt. The four losses are the least in a season in program history.
