MEMPHIS, Tenn. – James Madison softball dropped two games on the first day of the Tiger Classic, falling 8-6 in nine innings to Northwestern State and 6-2 against host Memphis on Friday at the Tiger Softball Complex.

The Dukes fell to 6-11 while the Lady Demons improved to 16-11 and the Tigers to 10-16.

GAME 1: JMU 6, Northwestern 8
Northwestern State got on the board first in the top of the second with an RBI single to left center.
Abbie Campbell responded by scoring off a wild pitch in the bottom of the second.

The Lady Demons followed with runs in the fourth and sixth, before
Kayla Boseman hit her fourth home run of the season to cut the lead to 3-2. Northwestern State then expanded its lead with a two run homer in the top of the seventh.

The Dukes tied up the game in the top of the seventh, starting off with a RBI double from
Morgan Mesaros.
Hannah Shifflett then slammed a single to center field to bring Mesaros home. A throwing error from the Lady Demons brought Shifflett home to tie up the game and take the Dukes into extra innings.

Northwestern took an 8-5 lead in the top of the ninth, and the
Isabelle Fishman responded in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single, but it was not enough to take the lead.

JMU pitchers tallied eight strike outs, with
Meredith Wells starting the second game of her career.

GAME 2: JMU 2, Memphis 6
The Tigers started off the scoring in the bottom of the second with an RBI double and a grand slam.

Gleason responded in the top of the fifth with an RBI double to send Mesaros home and later made it home herself on a throwing error by Memphis. However, the Dukes we unable to continue building and Memphis saw out the victory.

Fishman started her first game at pitcher for JMU and was relieved by Wells, who only allowed one run in 4.2 innings.

The Dukes will take on ETSU (10 a.m. ET) and Memphis (3 p.m. ET) on the second day of the Tiger Classic on Saturday.
